About Us

La Grande Rural Fire Protection District (LGRFPD), commonly known as Island City Fire Department, has been serving Island City, Oregon and our surrounding rural district since 1949. We provide fire, emergency medical services (EMS), and rescue services to our distict of approximately 6,000 residents. Our district covers approximately 135 square miles (nearly 100,000 acres), ranging from large industrial complexes, such as Boise Cascade Particle Board Plant and the Union County Airport, to residential areas and farm and ranch lands. The current fire chief is Craig Kretschmer.

Volunteer

La Grande Rural Fire District is always looking for dedicated people to join our department. Recruit academies will start after the first of the year. Stop by the fire department to speak to Chief Kretschmer and fill out an application!

In 2017, there were 1,056,200 firefighters in the United States. Of those, 65 percent were volunteers and 35 percent were career firefighters; 72 percent of career firefighters protect 25,000 or more people; 95 precent of volunteer firefighters protect fewer than 25,000 people.

There are an estimated 29,819 fire departments in the U.S. Of these, 9 percent of departments were all career, 8 percent were mostly career, 18 percent were mostly volunteer and 65 percent were all volunteer.
